Interview with Anelya Nazarbayeva by Rachel Laramee

When did you go to Temburong?
We went to Temburong at the beginning of February and this was our second time.
Where did you stay?
We went for a full jungle experience and stayed at “AZ Back 2 Nature Resort”. This place offers to stay in a room in the bamboo house or in a tent.
Was it a family-friendly location?
I would say yes. To get to the place you have to leave your car and go by longboat for 30 minutes with all your belongings. They will provide you with life jackets (but for smaller kids you need to take your own).
This time we had a low water level in the river, so there were few spots where we got stuck and our
guides plus some of us had to jump out and push the boat. That was fun!
Which activities did the children enjoy – and which ones did they dislike?
The winner for sure was tubing – going downstream on an inflated truck’s inner
tire after a long hike or climbing up to the canopy walk was an absolute joy and
rewarding. Adults loved it too. Maybe climbing 700+ steps to reach canopy walk wasn’t the kid’s favourite activity. They got tired.

Were there any issues with food?
The food that was served by the camp was local Iban tribe food. It had different options and varieties (bamboo chicken, fish, veggies, rice). We liked it and the kids ate it too.
Were there any items you wish you’d brought with you?
Because it wasn’t our first time, we came prepared. But a tip worth mentioning is to take extra clothes and pack them in a ziplock, as bags might get wet while you going on the boat, and take a towel because they don’t provide.

How did you all cope with little/no internet for a few days?
It was absolutely fine. We went there as a big group of friends, we actually rented out the whole place just for us. Being busy with activities, games and chat with friends we didn’t feel much the lack of Internet.
Would you visit again?
I am not much an outdoor person, but yes. We loved this experience and we would go there back.
